Hidden Spring

About Hidden Spring

Originally planted in 1986, Hidden Spring Vineyard has been at the forefront of the English Wine revolution for over 30 years. Hidden Spring is nestled between the villages of Horam and Vines Cross, the latter being named in 1595 after John Vyne, the vintner of Hellingly. Like many villages in the area, Horam was involved in the iron industry making the majority of English military cannons up until 1770. The ironstone in the clay soils was at the heart of cannon making alongside charcoal from the many surrounding woodlands. Our logo reflects this iron industry heritage and combines the classic form of cast iron estate gates intertwined with the vines that power the Hidden Spring Vineyard business today.

Our Philosophy

To create wine with exquisite balance, packed with intense fruit and a focus on exciting aromas, fun but grown up.

An uncompromising approach to quality at every stage from viticulture to winemaking and a meticulous approach to balancing fruit, sweetness and acidity sets a high bar for Hidden Spring wines. The best quality grapes sourced from our own and selected vineyards are gently pressed to extract the highest quality juice and fermented at low temperature to retain the fragile aromatics and flavours followed by lees aging to add even more character and complexity. A judicious use of part barrel fermentation and aging adds creaminess and delicious vanilla notes to our wines.

Our People

Hidden Spring is a boutique family run vineyard and winery with owners Chris and David responsible for viticulture and wine making respectively. After 20 year careers in IT in London Chris and David decided to switch to explore their passion for wine. Having been inspired by the vineyards of New Zealand they set about planting 25,000 vines in 2015 at the site in East Sussex and in 2017 decided to build a brand new purpose built winery so that the dream of grape to glass on site could be realised. Since the 2018 harvest, all Hidden Spring wines are grown and produced at Hidden Spring. Chris and David both learned their skills at Plumpton college the UK’s leading viticulture and wine making college.
